The Drivers' Rights Movement

The current gig economy is built to favor the big tech platforms. It should be prosperous and sustainable for workers, too.

Rideshare & delivery companies want the benefits of using independent contractors, without honoring the obligations.

They hide information that helps you decide whether or not to take a trip.
They stop you from using the tools you want to run your business better and safer.
They deactivate with no feedback or due process, your voice is not heard.

This is not what it means to be an independent contractor.
It’s also not fair.
Together, we can change things.

They hide information that helps you decide whether or not to take a trip.
They stop you from using the tools you want to run your business better and safer.
They deactivate with no feedback or due process, your voice is not heard.

We believe four basic principles would create a better gig economy:

  1. I’m in charge of my work
  2. I have a say in the system.
  3. My time is valuable.
  4. I own my data.

Applying these principles, drivers have the following rights:

RIGHT TO TRANSPARENCY

Platforms must provide all the information you need to determine whether or not to accept an opportunity:

  • Compensation (full pay)
  • Time, location, and travel distance required to complete a job
  • Health and safety issues related to the job
RIGHT TO CHOOSE HOW YOU WORK
  • You should have the freedom to choose and use the tools you want to run your business
  • You should have the freedom to reject or accept work opportunities without penalty
RIGHT TO OPPORTUNITY
  • You should have the freedom to work for multiple platforms and choose where your time is best spent
RIGHT TO A SAFE WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • You should feel safe and be safe at work.
  • You should have the freedom to choose and use tools that make driving and working safer.
RIGHT TO DATA AND DATA PRIVACY
  • You should be able to easily access your work profile and earnings history data
  • You should know and control who has access to your data, and be able to revoke access easily.
RIGHT TO DUE PROCESS
  • Right to due process free from unfair deactivations, and the right to understand why, appeal, and respond with representation.
RIGHT TO A VOICE
  • You should have an opportunity to be part of the conversation when legislation and workplace procedures that affect gig workers are established or changed.
RIGHT TO MAKE A LIVING
  • You should be able to earn a fair, living, minimum wage (after expenses)

Our fight is to ensure tech platforms honor these rights. There is power in our numbers, power in our voices.

NOT A DRIVER?

Ordering food? Calling a rideshare? Did you know that your tips don’t always reach your driver? This cuts into their wages, and affects your service.

Together, we can push companies to do the right thing.

I am tired of taking doordash orders that cost me money to deliver. They not only take my time they put where and tear and mileage on my vehicle and are not even trips worth taking. DD needs to be transparent about how much I will bring in for each delivery so I can make an informed decision on whether it will cost me money or make me money. This is a job not a daycare center for no tippers.
Karen Bowles
Gig workers deserve to know what they will be paid.
Kevin Kurcinik
As an independent contractor for DD, UE, GH, and Uber it is my right to have all the information prior to accepting an order. It baffles me that DoorDash continues to prevent their ICs from accessing critical information about potential orders. It’s almost as if they don’t care about their Dashers. Do better DD!
Zac Conway
I'm a Door dasher myself, although I haven't worked on that platform for a bit because of this.
Bryson Jeanie
As a Dashpass customer, I prefer to tip high so my order gets claimed and I get my food ASAP. With the tip hiding, my orders no longer get claimed right away, and I have to wait a lot longer for my food. If this is how it's going to be, I will not be renewing my Dashpass subscription.
Misty Hurley
I'm a gig worker and it's not right to hide tips from us hard working people.

Tired of my Family suffering due to door Dash games! That New York law should be everywhere!!!!!!!
Lindsay Price
Is there anyone who can honestly say they would take an assignment for unknown pay? Who does that? Why should drivers be forced to complete orders before knowing if they will even cover their expenses?
Stephanie Lemaster
I have the right to know what I'm working for.
Leigh Mikoloski
It is impossible to tell if a contract is worth taking or not when companies like Doordash hide tips to increase their own revenue. This forces drivers to take risks that they normally would not take and turns each job into a gamble to make the money they need to support their families. We should not need to resort to gambling. Either they show the full amount of pay so we can decide like the independent contractors that we are or they pay us as employees. They can not pay their drivers like independent contractors and treat their drivers like employees.
Patrick Sanfillipo
It's ridiculous that we are not allowed to make an informed decision with all the information given. They're forcing us to guess and in the end we end up making less than minimum wage because of their games
